Lake Rano (Telaga Rano) is located in Sahu District, West Halmahera, North Maluku province, at an altitude of 1,000 meters above sea level in the middle of Sahu forest. It has a natural beauty and there are also some wild animals such as deer and quail.
There are several villages that can be the starting point to Lake Rano, such as Gamsungi Village, Air Panas Village, Goal Village, Peot Village, and Sasur Village. Among those villages, the village which is the most often used as starting point is Gamsungi Village because there is road access for cars until the forest boundary. You can also ask the villagers there to guide you to Lake Rano. To travel to this location, you need to prepare food supplies and camping equipment. Trekking to Lake Rano is challenging and exhausting because the location is not easy to achieve.
Lake Rano is formed by volcanic activities thousand years ago. This lake is surrounded by cliffs, covered with bushy trees, with a height of more than 300 m. One of the cliffs at Lake Rano releases sulfur fumes. In the middle of the lake, there are several small islands. According to the locals, the small islands in the middle of Lake Rano can be shifted when the wind blows and it is agreed by a Javaness researcher who have studied the small islands of Lake Rano.
