Fort Tolukko is a Portuguese heritage which is located in Sangadji Village, North Ternate District, Ternate City, North Maluku province, Indonesia. Fort Tolukko was built by a Portuguese commander named Francisco Serao, in 1540. This Portuguese fort was built as a defense in the control of cloves and also to mastered the dominance among other European nations. This fort was taken over by Netherland in 1610 and was renovated by Pieter Both. In 1864, castle Tolukko was emptied by Residen P. van der Crab because some parts of the building has been damaged. The Government of the Republic of Indonesia restored this fort in 1996-1997.
Construction
Fort Tolukko is formerly known as Fort Hollandia. Fort Tolukko is built on the foundation of igneous rocks. This fort is formed of three bastions, basements, inner courtyard, hallways, and rectangular main building. Construction of the building is made from a mixture of river stones, reefs, and brick fragments which bonded together by a mixture of lime and sand.
