Ternate is a city under the foot of Mount Gamalama on Ternate Island, North Maluku province, Indonesia.
The city's history began with the Sultanate of Ternate which existed around the 13th century on the Ternate Island, which makes this city as the center of government. In 1607, Kornelis Matelief de Jonge built a fortress in this city, called Fort Oranje which previously named Malayu.
Ternate is a city of islands which has an area of 547,736 km², with 8 islands, consist of: Ternate Island, Hiri Island, Moti Island, Mayau Island, Tifure Island, Maka Island, Mano Island and Gurida Island. The three latter islands are small islands that are uninhabited.

5. Fort Kastela
Fort Kastela is a Portuguese heritage which is also known as Fort Gamlamo. This fort is located on Jalan Raya Benteng Kastela Santo Paulo, Kastela Village. This fort is on the north side of Kastela Beach.
6. Sulamadaha Beach
Sulamadaha Beach is located in Sulamadaha Village, Ternate, North Maluku province. Besides Hiri Island, in the west of Sulamadaha Beach, there is Saomadaha Bay. On the bottom of this bay, there are a marine park which makes this place an ideal spot for diving and snorkeling.
7. Lake Laguna
Lake Laguna or usually called as Lake Ngade by local people because it is located in Ngade Village which is about 18 kilometers from the center of Ternate and has an area of about eight hectares. Here, tourists will be pampered with a stretch of panoramic lake surrounded by green hills, blue sea and mountain.
8. Lake Tolire
Lake Tolire is one of the top attractions in Ternate. This lake, which lies at the foot of Mount Gamalama, has stunning scenery. Moreover, it also has a lot of mysteries, which makes the lake become very interesting to visit.

Bobaneha Ici beach is located in Aftador Village, approximately 20 km south of the city of Ternate.

This area is formed of the eruption of Mount Gamalama in 1673 then the dried lava formed beautiful boulders so this place becomes one of Ternate favorite places for tourists.

12. Masjid Al-Munawaroh Ternate
Masjid Al-Munawaroh was built by the city government of Ternate on the shoreline. The mosque is so captivating to be seen from the sea, with two towers was built on the sea, giving a beautiful sight. Masjid Raya Al-Munawaroh now becomes a landmark of Ternate.
13. Kastela Beach
Kastela beach is adjacent to Fort Kastela which you can find in Ternate. This place is rarely visited by tourists, but it has its own beauty.

For diving lovers, Ternate Island has many beautiful diving spots. Diving spots in Ternate are very close to the city so it will not make you weary. Diving season in Ternate is from May to October.
Legu Gam Festival
Legu Gam is a festival and at the same a public celebration in North Maluku. This event is held to celebrate Sultan of Ternate’s birthday, where people from all over the islands will gather in the Sultanate of Ternate. The implementation of Legu Gam Festival is an attempt to preserve the culture and customs in North Maluku.

Ternate has typical traditional arts and culture, including: Upacara Bersih Laut (ceremony to clean the sea), Horom Sasadu (traditional dining events), Legu Gam (festival for celebrating Sultan’s birthday), Soya Dance, Kololi Kie (indigenous ritual surrounding Ternate Island), Samra Dance, Badabus (mystical ritual combined with dance), Kolano Uci Sabea (ceremonial custom, Sultan comes out of the Palace heading to the Sultanate Mosque for praying on Eid and Eid al-Adha), Saro and Joko Kaha (rituals in special occasions i.e. wedding, baby birth, etc), Dana-Dana Dance, Penobatan Kapita (Custom Coronation Ceremony), Dadansa Dansa , Cakalele Dance, Ronggeng Dance, and Baramaswen (custom game with bamboo).
Culinary Tour
North Maluku has a variety of specialties such as popeda (sago), sayur lilin, walnut sambal, es kacang brenebon (iced red beans), pisang lumpur (fried banana with sauce), fofoki (eggplant cooked with coconut milk), ketam kenari (terrestrial hermit crab), pisang mulu bebe (typical kind of banana in North Maluku), halua kenari (walnut nougat), bagea (walnut cookies) and some fish dishes such as ikan fufu (smoked fish), gohu ikan, ikan garu rica, and others.
Ternate Typical Souvenirs
Typical souvenirs of North Maluku can easily be found in Pasar Higienis Bahari Berkesan and also in Ternate shopping center. You can also easily found batu akik or gemstones shops in the center of Ternate, some renowned stones are Bacan Stone and Obi Stone.

Airport
Sultan Baabulah Airport is the only airport in Ternate. From Jakarta, Makassar, Manado and Ambon, there are some direct flights to Ternate. If you are from other cities then has been mentioned before, then you must transit.
