Lake Tolire–Ternate Attraction with Million Mystery

Lake Tolire is located about 10 km from the center of Ternate, North Maluku province. In addition to its unique shape, Lake Tolire also has an interesting legend. The lake lies on the foot of Mount Gamalama, the highest volcano in North Maluku. The lake itself split into two. Local people call them as Large Tolire and Small Tolire. The distance between them is only about 200 meters.

From both lakes, Large Tolire has its own uniqueness. This lake resembles a giant pan. The depth from the top edge to the surface of the lake water is about 50 meters and the width is about 5 hectares. Meanwhile, the depth of the lake itself is unknown until now. No one has measured the depth of this lake. But according to the ancestors, the lake is very deep and directly related to the sea.

Large Tolire freshwater are home to a wide variety of fish. However, local people do not dare to catch fish or bathe in the lake. They believe that the lake is inhabited by crocodiles stealth. Tolire is also a habitat house to dozens of bird species, such as cockatoos, eagles, sriganti, egrets and others.

Another uniqueness of this lake is that you throwing something into the lake, no matter how strong you throw by using a stone or other object, it will never touch the water of the lake. So far, no one has been able to throw stones until it touch the surface of the lake water.

According to local people, there are many hidden treasures tucked away at the base of Large Tolire. This treasures belong to the people of Ternate Sultanate when the Portuguese colonized Ternate in the 15th century. The people of Ternate at that time threw their treasures into the lake so the Portuguese could not deprive it.

So far, there are no institutions or certain parties who perform investigations for this case. But some time ago, a member of Brimob (Mobile Brigade) did some investigation by using sonar to detect objects that exist in the bottom of the lake. As a result, there are indications of metal objects at the bottom of the lake.

The Folklore

Once upon a time before the lake was formed, the area of the lake is now located used to be a village or settlement. People of the village live in prosperity and have a strong kinship. Until one day, something happens that shocked the entire village. There is a father impregnates his own daughter. Inevitably, it makes the whole villagers angry. That father and his daughter are expelled from the village.

Embarrassed then both of them leave the village. As they step away from the village, there is a strange incident. The place where they stay immediately split as a result of a devastating earthquake. The creator angry at the father, daughter and the village, and punish them into two lakes, that is one large lake which was then called the Large Tolire (Lamo) which describes the father. One smaller lake called Small Tolire (Ici) that reflects the daughter.

It was said that the villagers who drowned into the lake, was turned into white crocodiles that protect the lake until now. Locals believe not just one or two white crocodiles live in that lake, but hundreds of white crocodiles measuring about 10 meters which often appear. That is why visitors are banned for bathing, swimming, and even fishing at Lake Tolire because they believe whoever disturbs the lake will become a prey to white crocodiles.

All of these stories are unique and contain mysteries that certainly interesting for tourists visiting this place, besides its beautiful scenery.
