Kasiruta Island is often visited by Bacan gemstone hunters which popular even to foreign countries. Kasiruta Island also has its own beauty because the nature is still unexploited and its clear sea, making it suitable for snorkeling on this beach. In ancient times, the island is a place of the Sultanate of Bacan, before moving to Bacan Island. You can also find the ruins of a fort on this island, but unfortunately the condition is not well maintained. Kasiruta Island is one of the attractions in South Halmahera, North Maluku province.


Bacan Gemstones

Bacan stones is currently the most frequently searched gemstones. Many Koreans come to Kasiruta Island only to find Bacan Stones and then traded it in their country. Around 1994, many collectors of precious stones abroad started to hunt Bacan stones, but in Indonesia it became popular in around 2005 and made the price soared. Bacan stone actually has long been known and is often used as jewelry by the Sultanate of Bacan, Jailolo, Tidore and Ternate.

The most common kind of Bacan stones (Chrysocolla Calcedony) is Doko and Palamea. Doko and Palamea is the name of village on Kasiruta Island. Bacan doko stones usually have a green color, while the types of palamea is light green with slight bluish. But actually, Bacan stones has about 9 kinds of colors. Among them are brown, red, transparent white, red, milky white, dark yellow, and so on.

The advantage of Bacan stones is on its ability to proceed naturally, which commonly referred as "living stones". The longer the time, the more beautiful stone formed, because it is getting clearer. The color of Bacan stones can change from black to green. Besides, Bacan doko types can also absorb other compounds, for example if the stone is attached with golden color straps then the stone will gradually has golden color spots. Another advantage of this stone is its hardness of 7.5 Mohs scale, which is harder than jade.

Bacan stones is famous worldwide and already marketed in Arab, Europe, China, and so on. In Taiwan, Bacan stones from Indonesia are often known as blue jade or stone that has a blue color. Bacan stones are usually mounted in a ring, necklace or belt buckle. If you are interested to buy Bacan stones, you should ask for instructions or advice from people who understand the authenticity of Bacan stones because today there are many people counterfeit it, and also to avoid you buying the "dead" Bacan stones that could not be purer anymore.

Access

The access to Kasiruta Island from Bacan Island by speedboat is about 2-3 hours. By passenger ship, the long journey is about 4 hours.
